Review of California City, California

Good place overall
Star Rating - 3/10/2021
My husband and I moved here in Nov 2014 from San Bernardino and we moved here for one reason, we got an enormous house with lots of land and no neighbors for $64,200. No mortgage because cash was paid for the house so I cannot speak to mortgage or rent prices. We had never been to California City and we bought our house blindly through a realtor. We still live in Cal City today and are very happy where we live. All of the houses here are pretty much new construction. Many are being built or just recently built and lots of houses built in the 1990's-2000's. The crime is seriously based on where you live within Cal City. I highly suggest for anyone reading this and wanting to move here, make sure you don't move near any of the Section 8 apartments and check with the police department or locals about the area you're considering. At night time it's very quiet in some areas of Cal City including where I live. The street I live on, my somewhat far away neighbors are all home owners and we don't live next to Section 8 apartments or high crime areas. Due to some original zoning no one will ever be able to move or build on either side of me or behind me, so I have a lot of open desert. The best place to live in Cal City are the empty areas where there's not many if any neighbors and yes we have plenty of streets here that have just one house and some none. I live near the high school and have no problems with crime. Overall, I highly recommend Cal City but, if you don't have a car you're going to find things very difficult. We only have one post office, one doctor, one pharmacy, Dollar General, Family Dollar, quite a few restaurants and we're getting a Starbucks in the next few months, as well a full grocery store will be opening here also in the next few months called Tropicana. We do not have a hospital or urgent care in Cal City. If you don't have a car and need to go anywhere outside of Cal City, you have to board the big blue metro bus that heads out of town. It's run on a schedule of every 1 1/2 hours. I ride the bus twice a month and I really enjoy it, never any problems on there that I've dealt with. Also, we have a company called Dial-A-Ride here and it's a small town bus that takes you anywhere in town you want to go. Fee is $1.75 per adult, per trip and $1 for kids. They have discounted rates also if you're a senior or disabled. The only real issue I've had is being forced to put my Jewish necklace in my shirt because I have been called slurs and cussed out for being Jewish. We have a lot of different people here including Mexicans, Blacks, Whites and in betweens. Most people in town are friendly and will chat with you. There aren't any jobs available here though. A lot of our town lives off welfare and food stamps, so most people here aren't working. The last thing is there's no entertainment here. We have two parks and that's the end of entertainment. When there are sports and the weather permits there are games at one of the parks in Cal City where they have fields and concession stands. We do have a basketball goal at that same park too. Overall, this is a nice place to live but I wouldn't call it a "City". It's more like a town.
